OUR STORY
WHY LE BISTROT?
A French restaurant with a reason to exist
Le Bistrot is inside the Institut Français d’Écosse — Scotland’s French cultural centre, part of the Institut Français network that operates across the world. It’s a building dedicated to French language, culture, and connection.
The restaurant belongs here. Not just geographically, but in spirit.
We’re not trying to be a Parisian theme park. We’re a proper French bistro — the kind of place where the cooking is taken seriously, the welcome is genuine, and you don’t need a special occasion to come in.

THE KITCHEN TAKES IT SERIOUSLY. SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE.
Our chef cooks everything to order. That’s not a marketing line — it means that when you sit down and choose something from the menu, it hasn’t been made already. It’s made for you.
The team front of house are the same. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely proud of the place. We’re not a large operation, and that’s rather the point. You’ll notice the difference.
French cooking at its best is about discipline and generosity in equal measure. That’s what we try to bring to every table.

We’re at 59–63 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1RN — inside the French Institute. The entrance is on George IV Bridge, not the Royal Mile side. Walk in through the Institute and the restaurant is straight ahead. If in doubt, give us a ring and we’ll talk you through it.
Edinburgh Castle is about 100 metres up the hill. St Giles’ Cathedral is just behind us. There’s pay-and-display parking nearby, and the area is well served by buses along the Bridges and the Royal Mile.
